Privacy notice

This privacy notice explains which personal data we process when you use Bettie.

Scope

This notice applies to the Bettie website, browser-based web app and the associated backend, support and moderation processes. External websites and services linked from Bettie have their own privacy notices.

Processing when you use Bettie

Website/app access and security

When you access the website or use the iOS app, we process technically necessary log data, in particular IP address, time, requested function, referrer where technically transmitted, and browser, device and diagnostic information. This processing supports secure and stable operation, error analysis and abuse prevention (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). Server and application logs are generally retained for no more than 30 days unless longer retention is necessary to investigate a security incident.

Account and sign-in

When you register, we process your email address, display name, password hash, email-confirmation time, confirmation of the minimum age and terms of participation, and account status. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we process the identifier supplied by the selected provider and, where released, your email address, display name and verified-email status. We process this data to provide and secure your account (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR). On the web, session cookies are used only for sign-in and security. In the iOS app, the session token is stored in the protected iOS Keychain through SecureStore.

Predictions, leagues and leaderboards

We process your predictions, the virtual amounts used for them, market and league assignments, account movements and leaderboard values so that the game can operate. Your display name, publicly visible predictions and leaderboard positions may be shown to other signed-in users. A leaderboard is not publicly visible on the internet without sign-in. The legal bases are performance of the terms of participation (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR) and our legitimate interest in fair, verifiable game operation (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Oracle Score and automated decisions

The Oracle Score, leaderboard values and game standings are calculated automatically from predictions and resolved events under the displayed game rules. They are used only for the game and have no legal or similarly significant effect on you. Account suspensions or deletions are not decided solely by automated means.

Political and other specially protected information

A prediction about a political topic is not automatically a political opinion for data-protection purposes. We do not deliberately evaluate your prediction history to infer political views or other specially protected characteristics. Do not publish personal or particularly sensitive information about third parties in free text, your own markets or leagues.

Shareable expertise cards

We create an expertise card only after you explicitly select it. You decide whether it appears anonymously, with a public tag or with your display name. The public link is used only to display the card you selected; we do not measure whether it is opened or forwarded, or whether a prediction is subsequently submitted. You can revoke the public link. Account deletion also disables it and anonymizes the stored public presentation. We cannot retrieve screenshots already saved or copies held in other platforms’ caches.

Reports, blocking and moderation

If you report publicly visible content or block an account, we process your account identifier, the affected content or account, the report reason, optional explanation, timestamps and review status. This is necessary to review unlawful or abusive content, hide blocked accounts from you and operate Bettie safely (Article 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR). Reports are accessible only to authorized people and, once closed, are retained only as long as necessary for evidence, abuse prevention or legal obligations. Decisions about reports, suspensions or deletion are not made solely by automated means.

Support requests

If you contact us, we process the contact details and request content you provide so we can respond (Article 6(1)(b) or (f) GDPR). We delete or anonymize support requests once they have been fully handled and no legal obligation or legitimate interest requires further retention.

Transactional email

We send email to confirm your address and reset your password. We use Resend as a processor for this purpose. Confirmation links are valid for 24 hours and password-reset links for 60 minutes. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) GDPR.

Hosting and service providers

We use Vercel for the web application and Amazon Web Services for delivery, application operation, the database and logging. We use Dash0 for technical service monitoring. Google or Apple is activated only if you select that sign-in provider. Google Analytics loads only after you consent. These providers process data on our behalf or act as independent controllers for the selected sign-in service. Where data is processed outside the European Economic Area, this is based on the applicable safeguards, in particular the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.

Cookies and local storage

Bettie uses technically necessary cookies for sign-in, session management, Google sign-in and saving your cookie choice. In the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, we load Google Analytics only after you consent. With consent, Google Analytics may set analytics cookies to evaluate use of Bettie. We use Google Analytics without Google Signals, personalized advertising or advertising cookies. You can withdraw consent at any time through Privacy settings in the footer. Technically necessary storage is based on Section 25(2) TDDDG; your consent is the legal basis for Google Analytics (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR).

Partner links and embedded content

On partner and media pages, and in Bettie widgets embedded by other websites, we measure reach without cookies. We store only the event type (such as view or click), placement, the affected market where applicable, the hostname of the referring page and the time. We do not store IP address, user agent or user account for this measurement; it is not associated with a person and counts events rather than unique visitors. If you select a partner link, you are redirected to the partner’s website and its privacy notice applies. Third-party widgets load a Bettie page in an iframe; this privacy notice applies to that content, while the embedding website processes access data under its own responsibility. We delete this reach data after no more than 12 months. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in marketing and measuring the reach of our service (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Retention periods

We retain account and game data for the life of your account. Revoked cards are no longer publicly accessible; we retain evidence and neutral lifecycle data to preserve integrity and prevent abuse. Blocks remain until they are lifted or the account is deleted. Closed moderation reports are reviewed regularly and deleted or anonymized once they are no longer required for evidence, abuse prevention or legal obligations. When an account is deleted, we also anonymize the stored public presentation and remove or anonymize other data unless legal retention obligations or legitimate interests require otherwise.

Your data-protection rights

Subject to the legal requirements, you have rights including access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection, and the right to withdraw consent for the future. To exercise your rights, contact datenschutz@axelspringer.com with “Bettie – data-subject rights” in the subject line. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data-protection supervisory authority.
