Will manipulation at the 2026 World Cup be investigated by year-end?
Half the soccer internet is convinced: Defending champion Argentina’s run was no coincidence. Controversial VAR incidents, the disallowed goal in Egypt’s elimination, wild rumors of alleged payments to referees—fact-checkers, including Euronews, have so far found no evidence, and FIFA and the referees deny everything. Even so, rumors are swirling from Football365 and The Ringer to the German local press. And because many people do not trust FIFA itself, FIFA is explicitly not the only authority that counts here: Prosecutors, courts, parliaments, or hard, evidence-backed investigations by major newsrooms can also make this an official case. So is this all just sore losers—or will something actually come to light? Predict YES if you think this will become an official case by the end of the year. Predict NO if it remains an internet myth.

Resolution rule
YES if, by and including 12/31/2026 (11:59 p.m. German time), at least one of the following publicly and officially occurs—deliberately not limited to FIFA, which itself has been accused of corruption: (1) A government investigative or judicial authority in any country (e.g., a public prosecutor’s office, the US Department of Justice, or the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland) officially announces an investigation into possible manipulation, bribery, or improper influence on matches or refereeing decisions at the 2026 World Cup. (2) A government court or the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) finds that such manipulation occurred or imposes a sanction because of it. (3) A parliament or government oversight or regulatory authority officially launches an investigation into it (e.g., a parliamentary inquiry or hearing). (4) At least two independent national or international news organizations (e.g., Der Spiegel, Süddeutsche Zeitung, ARD Sportschau, Reuters, AP, or New York Times) publish document-based investigations—such as leaked records or proof of payments—that provide concrete evidence of manipulation at the 2026 World Cup. (5) Or FIFA itself acknowledges manipulation or confirms a formal investigation by its Ethics Committee or Disciplinary Committee. Mere opinion pieces, anonymous social media claims, or reports without concrete evidence do not count; investigations exclusively into other issues (e.g., ticket allocation or doping) also do not count. In all other cases: NO.
